I’m having a crisis of faith.

Ok, ok, it’s not what you think.  It’s to do with politics.  As some of you may have gathered over the months, I’m a staunch Labor voter here in Australia.  I always have voted Labor and would like to think I always would.  BUT, it is quite likely that my vote will now be going to the Greens at this years Federal Election.  There is no way that the Liberal/National Coalition will ever see a vote from me while ever they support big business over the people of this country.  They have dragged us down from a nation of workers with respect, to a nation of workers that have had to grovel and beg for their rights.  That may never change as governments are most often reluctant to undo changes made by previous governments.  Yes, I know it has happened and has when Labor won government at the last election, but they only went so far and way too many workers have fallen by the wayside since.  There are too many sweatshop type businesses operating in this country and far too many operating with illegal immigrants to save money.  If they are unable to get the work done cheap enough here, many are now moving production offshore and still using sweatshop labour when selling here at top prices.

This need to pander to big business, together with the reluctance to stand up to the Christian Right is turning Australia into a Nanny State.  Most religions are now only just businesses anyway, so there isn’t much difference between the two.  Business gives them money to fund elections and the religious give them a big block of votes.

If we just look at the current situation, we have Labor wanting to put a larger tax onto mining companies, but hit us with an internet filter that is censorship at it’s worst.  The Liberal/National Coalition would scrap the tax and let business be subsidised by the workers again, but say they would scrap the filter.  Both are pandering to the Christians.  Neither can be trusted not to change their minds once they win government though.

We are at a crossroads here in Australia where the Greens are now at a stage where they have enough power to force governments to deal with them on a day to day basis.  Not only that, if things continue the way they are, we may end up with another Coalition that includes the Greens the way they have had to do in Tasmania this year.  I do not think the Greens have the depth in their ranks to take government and do the job on their own even if they did win enough seats.  They just don’t have that kind of experience.  But as a power behind the power, they are uniquely qualified to steer this country in the right direction.  A direction that will bring it back to the place it deserves.  We have fought hard to keep this country ‘Australian’ and by that I mean the qualities that make it Australian, not the ‘white nationalist’ qualities some would prefer and not the ’51st State of the USA’ that others seem intent on accomplishing.

I say screw the business interests and screw the religious sycophants.  Give the Greens the power to turn this country into a social and environmental success while the Labor Party look after the economic and international side of affairs.  The rest they can haggle over.

The two major parties have shown they are only interested in staying in government and they don’t care what the people say.  Neither of them really want to do anything in electorates that aren’t their own.  Too many independents are only there to push their own shortsighted and narrow religious views.  There are the exceptions, but not many.  On their own they have limited power and when it is only their vote that can win the day, they have far too much power invested in that one person.

While a Labor/Greens Coalition may just end up like the Liberal/National Coalition, it won’t do it right away.  That may just give us time to fix the problems and show them all that things can be done in a better manner.  I say we give the Greens a go.  It certainly can NOT be worse than what we have now.

ONLY A GREEN VOTE WILL HAVE REAL POWER THIS YEAR

You had me going for a minute. I thought you were about to 'out' yourself as a new member of Senator Fielding's Hillbilly 'Family First' party!

Well, the only trouble will be that (like in US politics) we'll be dividing votes that probably would have gone to Labor and letting the liberals get first past the post.

Tony Abbott is too fucking scary to contemplate: the man's not only a climate change denialist, he's a creationist, homophobe and let's not forget how he acted while in charge of health (abortion drugs needed his approval for some bizarre reason) and his stance on stem cell research was appallingly ignorant.

So I'd say that I agree with you that (like the last few elections) it's important to send a message, and I have voted in that fashion before (a labor/greens coalition might be interesting), but not so much that you let tony abbott end up in power (e.g. then we're doubly screwed: no talk of "postponing" climate action, just "it isn't our fault and mining rocks and saved us all from poverty!")

Anyhow, we've got preferential voting: use it people. Just be aware of another family first nutjob sneaking in via the quirks of it.

If Labor loses this election, you can blame Stephen Conroy.

Ever since the moronic notion of filtering the Internet entered Stephen Conroy’s head or was injected by someone else (probably a Lib/Nat), Labor has been inching ever closer to losing the upcoming election. The even stranger part is that they have had their heads so far up their own propaganda that they can’t see the outcome even though over 90% of the population has been screaming it at them since the last election.

I can’t imagine how many children will still be hurt and criminals evade justice because Conroy and his cohort are going to waste $128.8 million on this farce instead of injecting it into the budget of the department of the Federal Police that looks after child crimes.  How much good could be  done if they had the resources they require to catch the pedophiles and child pornographers?

Conroy has repeatedly asked people why they don’t care about children when they have opposed the Filter.  I have to ask if he is willing to go to jail for the rest of his life if the crimes he says will drop actually go up after introduction of the Filter.  No ifs, ands buts or maybes this time.  No worming his way out of it.  He’s asked the question enough times himself.  Is he willing to pay the price when he’s shown to be wrong?  Not that it will ever happen, because if Labor do not change their mind on this policy within the next month it will be too late to drag back the support they are losing at the moment.  I have been amazed at the amount of people who swear their allegiances will change at the next election if this goes ahead.  This is not just a one time ‘bad decision’ they can overcome with time.  This will leave a stain on the Labor movement that will last while ever people remember what has been done.

The absolute uncaring attitude towards the people of this country that is being shown is not something that I had ever expected to see in my lifetime.  I have always voted Labor and had planned to always do so.  The minor parties have always seemed to be more trouble than they are worth and the Liberal/National Coalition is way too synonymous with ‘Big Business’ to ever attract my vote.  Their philosophy of taking care of the BHP’s and Rio Tinto’s of this country so that the dollars trickle down to us was, is and always will be crap.  The more they make the more profits go to the investors instead of dropping prices.  That is not in our interest.  The smaller parties have had no significant influence on anything of any real importance to the population until the last election and it seems to be more the independents (read christian backed morons) that are making the biggest noises.  Though it does look likely that the next election will be when the ‘Rise of the Greens’ really happens and they will have to be courted in a much more significant manner than ever before.  Maybe even a coalition of Labor/Greens?

Whatever happens all depends on whether Rudd has enough commonsense and courage to put Conroy back in his bottle and bury him in the backbenches where he belongs.  Give that job to Kate Lundy and let’s fix this mess up now before it is too late.  The Lib/Nats are licking their lips everytime Conroy promotes the filter.  We all know that Abbott is a losing proposition for them after his and Ms Bishops faux pa’s of the last couple of weeks.  Malcolm Turnbull didn’t just change his mind because he likes being in opposition.  He has the numbers and knows that he will be back as leader very shortly and when he is, you’ll hear real opposition to the filter from them as well.

Rudd must come out in direct opposition to the filter and soon.  He must be seen to be firm in his opposition now that the facts are in.  Yes, we’ve known they’ve been in for a long time, but he has to play the game.  It’s either that or be relegated to history as the PM that had no balls to do what he knew was right.

HAS THE MILKY BAR KID BEEN OUT IN THE SUN TOO LONG?

State controlled internet access is the thin end of the wedge but maybe if he was proposing filtering out the Vatican and the Australian Christian Lobby I might be more interested!

Yes, Conroy is a liability to Labor – but his poor performance could easily be cancelled out on the Coalition side by their own resident liability, Barnaby Joyce!

It get's worse – just imagine if we get a hung Parliament and Senator Fielding's bunch of Hillsong Hillbillies get enough seats to hold the balance of power!

Where will more religous power in government lead?

I’ve just been sitting here thinking about dictatorships.  I haven’t been able to come up with one where the people are truly happy or even halfway happy with their situation.  Even in some so-called democracies these days, one person or group has so much control that they are effectively dictatorships.  When and only when the politicians know that their jobs rest upon the peoples safety, health, education and job security, will the country be in adequate hands.  I say adequate because at my age, I’ve learnt enough about governments to know that they aren’t all about the people.  But I digress.

The old saying of ‘power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely’ is one worth bearing in mind at the moment.

We have seen over the past couple of decades, the church gaining more and more influence in political circles whether by lobbying or by getting their own candidates into power.  There are so many bible wielding politicians running around here in this country that it scares me.  I can’t cope with the idea of what it must be like in the USA.  But this is the fate we are all facing, whether we are there now or not.  As they gain more control, they exert more pressure and are able to pass laws, block laws and repeal laws of which they do not favour.  Are you starting to see where this is going?

Go a little further down the track to when they have enough power to control a political party that has the power to pass laws at will without needing votes from the opposing party.  Say goodbye to freedom, abortion, women’s rights, gay rights, children’s rights, freedom of thought, atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, skeptics, humanitarians, condoms, divorce, adult entertainment, scientific progress, freedom from slavery, modern forms of justice, freedom of religion, freedom from religion, secular education, sex education,  sex before marriage, mini skirts, see through blouses, bikinis, cleavage, blasphemy, freedom of speech, IVF, the Internet, advances in medical science, evolution etc.  We may as well turn the clock back to around the time of the Dark Ages.

Look forward to compulsory church at least once a week to start with, compulsory baptisms, shorter life spans, higher rates of death during childbirth, book burnings, witch hunts, restriction and requirements on how we bring up our children, weekend exorcisms in the park, holy wars, compulsory Latin classes, One 24 hour Evangelist Tv channel, Xtian Music Radio only and The Inquisition.

This is not just for us atheists.  Think about it.  Just how many of your xtian friends would really want to live in that world?  I honestly can’t think of any of mine that would.  Most of them are way too addicted to modern society to want to give all that up.  I think we should let them know just what kind of world that they are advocating for and that they don’t even realise it.

Think about your current life.  Think about the things you and your family have worked hard for and then think about how much of all that you would have to give up.  How many of your freedoms would be curtailed?  What is the future for your children?  Grandchildren?  How many of you business owners would have to shut down once they start listing things the devil might like?  No video shops for sure.  Cinemas would only show children’s movies.  Most would have to shut through non-attendance.  These are only a couple and you know the list will grow and grow as they get more power.  All you xtians that have your little xtian dances and discos.  Do you really think they will last?  Not on your life.  Xtian Rock Bands?  They’ll go.  Unless they change their clothes to a more sedate style and only sing hymns.  This sounds scary I know, but that is just a taste of what is to come if they get their way.  Think hard xtians.  It wasn’t just the ungodly that suffered the last time the church was in power.  Xtians died in their millions too.   Didn’t matter whether they were innocent or not.  All that mattered was that the Church was seen to be doing something, whether the people liked it or not.

    WELCOME TO YOUR FUTURE

If we lived in a theocracy, we would find ourselves unable to criticise christians, jews or muslims, unable to bring pedophile priests to justice, unable to sue the church for their misdeeds, unable to prosecute those responsible for covering up crimes committed in the name of god.

We would have public holidays on religious festivals. We would also be forced to give churches full tax exemption and relieve them of any basic fair trading requirements to tell the truth about their products. We would have people killing other people in the name of Jesus and flying planes into buildings in the name of allah. We would be supporting the right of parents to brainwash their children from birth and we would have religious chaplains in schools and hospitals. The government would pay huge sums of money to faith schools and we might also all have our genitals forcibly mutilated to please god.

Oh, wait a moment. That's just the stuff we already have………….

    The Pontiff has no clothes…

I have written many thousands of words on the topic of child abuse and the Catholic Church to the  point of even describing it as being a full time hobby.  In a way it was a hobby to begin with as blogging was just something to fill in the time.  But after writing the first article on religion it started to become much more.

This started quite young when I’d see other kids going off to Sunday School.  This was before I even had to go.  The kids walking down the street with their parents or going past in their cars watching me playing out the front of the house would mostly look at me with what I thought was a kind of hatred.  At least that was what I thought it was.  I eventually found out one day what the true cause was.  They were jealous.  Of me?  I couldn’t understand that.  But it was true.  They were being dragged off to a place they didn’t want to be instead of out playing like I was.  I always thought of myself as the poor kid around town and felt like the outsider.  I thought they looked down on me.  In a way they did, but it was also because I was having fun on the weekend and they weren’t.  I never fully understood it till my mother made me go to Sunday School.  You can read about that experience here – Part One and here – Part Two.

When I did get sent to Sunday School I learnt why they didn’t want to be there.  One thing that confused me was that some of them weren’t even there when I arrived.  I asked one kid I knew where the others were and he told me they were over at the Catholic Church.  Wow, there was more than one kind!  If you have read those other two articles you’ll know I wasn’t long for that place.

This feeling has lasted me right throughout my life.  Now that my children have all grown up to one degree or another I find myself able to sit and ponder lifes questions much easier than you can when a 3 year old wants to use your hair as a handhold to climb up on your shoulders.

So now we move on to what has been annoying me about the Catholic Church for a long time.

Whereas most religions today are getting out of hand, back then the Catholic Church was not much different to the way they are today.  This is not to say that I think that is a good thing, but more to say that they have always been a force for bigotry, intolerance and downright inhumanity to man.   The difference today is that due to technology progressing to where it is, they are more ‘in your face’ than they used to be.  It used to be that they were in their homes or in their church.  Now it’s all over the news, radio, newspapers and internet.  Non believers or believers of other faiths are no longer able to go about their business without hearing the intolerant ravings of the Pope and his followers.

This has also been to the detriment of the Church, as it has allowed us to hear more of the negative side of their existence.  This means that we, as a community, have to weigh the good and bad.  We have to make a decision as to whether the Church is a more positive influence on humanity or not.  You can’t just sit by with your head buried in the TV Guide going “lalalalalalala, I can’t hear you”.  That is a vote to allow them to continue on their merry way.

How do we weigh up such things?  I suppose we can draw up lists of good and bad.  Things such as their charity work in poorer countries on one side and the fact that they teach those people not to use condoms till they die of AIDS on the other.  We could go on like that all day, but is it necessary?  I don’t believe so.  There are things in this world that cannot be balanced against.

How do you weigh up a child’s welfare or a person’s life against a water well or missionary work as you would the cost effectiveness of fixing a piece of machinery against buying a new one?  There are evils that should not be mitigated by good works.

We have, over many decades now, heard of the many thousands of cases of child abuse by Catholic Priests, Nuns and Laypeople.  If you have the stomach for it, you can read any number of my blog articles and see exactly what I mean.  The Church has been doing this for so long it goes well back past living memory.

With the advent of the Internet, the Church is no longer able to hide behind ‘time’.  It is all coming out these days and the people should wake up and stop the atrocities.  We cannot allow this to continue.  How can we call ourselves civilised when we allow this to continue in the name of ‘not saying anything disrespectful about the Church’?  It has to stop.

The Pope himself presided over the writing of a document meant to hide the evidence.  Nobody can claim to have risen to that position, write that document and not know of the abuse.  That is what it was all about.  Living in this age of the ‘information highway’ nobody can claim, especially not the Clergy themselves, that they didn’t know of the cases of abuse in other diocese’s or countries.  It’s their business to know. Everyone reading this knows that they have heard of cases over and over for decades now.  The problem was that nothing much was made of it because you can’t keep harping on the subject without being accused of being ‘against the Church’ or a ‘blasphemer’ or shock horror, a ‘non-believer’.  Those days have past.  We know what is happening.  They know what is happening.

It comes down to this: The Catholic Church as an organisation is a haven for child abusers. They have been at it for longer than anyone can remember.  The Pope, as Cardinal Ratzinger, knew for a long time this was happening and only wrote a document that has done nothing but allowed it to continue undercover and with full knowledge of the Vatican.  As Pope, he has not rescinded that document which shows he has no intent to bring it all out into the open and fix the problem.  In his letter to the people of Ireland he has blamed them for their lack of piety, blamed secularism for leading them astray and blamed the Irish Priesthood for lack of faith and obedience to doctrine.  At no time has he ever uttered one word that would even hint at him taking any kind of responsibility.

    He Knew

    He Did Nothing

    THE PONTIFF HAS NO CLOTHES

“These children are the future of our world, and they must not be made to bear the ignominy of the past. We shall set a goal that ANY priest, or nun, of any rank involved in these activities shall be cast out of this church and subject to the law of the land wherein the offenses took place, and a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual abuse will be in force from this day onward.”

your article yesterday mentioned a really interesting solution: make churches child proof. in the UK and i believe in Australia too, adults that have access to children are checked by the police, so if you have a conviction that involves children you can't work, or have access to them. if we use the same law for priests, than children would be more protected. another important aspect of this is that instead of waiting for the church to cease to exist, ordinary people can actually start to ask their representatives to make the church more accountable, that no institution can or should be above the law? What do you think?
I loved reading about your childhood experience, thanks for sharing such a beautiful story.

Please read my currrent blog on the topic of Pope abuse. I theorize that they have been child rapers since the time of christ.
That's why they will always try to cover their tracks than pay for their crimes.

Why are Wooists so interested in what we do?

First I’d like to start with the exact opposite and say right up front that Atheists aren’t so much interested in what Wooists do or think as in stopping their disproportionate influence on society.  Why?  That takes us back to the original question.

It seems that Wooists have this overweaning attitude to everything that anybody who doesn’t believe in their skyfairy does.  What is it about our actions that so  intrigues them that it not just borders on voyeuristic, but goes way past that point?

You see, why I bring up this point is that we are forever hearing about people taking out court orders etc, to stop stalkers.  First, I want to get a decent understanding of that word.  Let’s not give anyone a reason to say this isn’t what they do. So here, is the meaning of stalk.

    1. To pursue by tracking stealthily.
    2. To follow or observe (a person) persistently, especially out of obsession or derangement.
    3. To go through (an area) in pursuit of prey or quarry.

Let’s take them one by one and see how they fit.

    1. To pursue by tracking stealthily.  When you think about how organised they are and the fashion in which JW, LDS and SDA go house by house, street by street, it would seem that they do have some kind of plan they work to.  They don’t let you know they are coming, they just turn up.  THAT sounds like stalking to me

    2. To follow or observe persistently, especially out of obsession or derangement.  Rather self explanatory.  How much more persistent can you be?  They never stop.  Also, because they keep coming back even after I’ve asked them not to, I’d call that obsessive too.

    3. To go through (an area) in pursuit of prey or quarry.  Well, that’s easily seen as stalking.  How many times have they knocked on your door?  How many times do they need to be told no, before they stop?  They keep coming back looking for converts.  We are their quarry.  They want to convert us.

It was alright for us to exist to some extent while we were being quiet about their activities, but since they’ve ramped it up to the point of influencing our governments, ripping us off with their tax exempt status and abusing our children with complete immunity, we have become outspoken and they don’t like it.

    1. Websites have been hit with DDOS attacks.
    2. Forums are invaded by wooists and we get abused, insulted and threatened.
    3. Try putting something about atheism on your car and see how long before it gets vandalised.
    4. Drive past a church and see how many of their signs are either insulting or threatening about us and our future.
    5. Try getting your son into the Scouts once they find out you are atheist or gay.
    6. Try getting into some churches when they find out you are gay.

Now they are influencing the internet by getting governments to install filters.  This is happening here in Australia at this very moment.  Once they get the filter up and running it’s only a matter of adding URL’s or words to the filter and bingo, sites just won’t appear.  When governments change, how do we know what the next one will add?

Church groups already influence the government censors.  Don’t kid yourselves that they aren’t on the committees that view the movies, listen to the cd’s and try out the newest computer games before any of them are allowed to be sold, played or viewed.

You have to ask though, if they are seeing all this bad stuff, how many of them have then gone out and shot somebody, raped someone, set fire to a building, stolen a car, murdered someone, robbed a bank?  That would seem to argue against their existence.

You will see signs on buses nearly everywhere you go extolling the virtues of religion or some particular religious group, but atheist signs are now too inflammatory.  Why is one inflammatory and the other not?  It’s just two opposing groups points of view.  If one can do it there is no reason to stop the other.

These things go on and on.  Religion can, but we mustn’t.  The strange thing is that we aren’t even in the minority here.  So why is it happening?  Because non-believers, secularists, humanists, atheist or whatever label you wish to use are not as outspoken.  We are becoming more so because our rights as equal citizens is being eroded day by day by wooists who think they have the g-d given right to rule.

So what we have are ‘believers’ who have insinuated themselves into government in such a way as to influence policy and they think that is their right. You also have non-believers who have had enough and are speaking up about it.  Now the ‘believers’ are unhappy and say we should keep out of it because they know better than us.  Why?  Because their little book of woo tells them so.

I’m sorry, but I thought we run our country based on it’s constitution and the laws we lay down around it.  None of them are entitled ‘little book of woo’.  It really is time my friends for the idea of ‘not talking about religion’ to end.  They have had their chance and have been found lacking.  Remove their religious influence and get back to running this country for everyone including those who don’t believe, those less fortunate and those without a large mouth backed by church groups and not the ideas of some Zombie from 2000 years ago.

    ZOMBIES DON’T GET A VOTE

    Strange people…

    1.  I know that there is little that can be said that hasn’t been said before by those able to put it into words in a better manner than I.  Having said that, if we never repeated these things, we may as well all give up talking, writing, typing and chiseling altogether.  Oh, maybe spraypainting as well as I’ve seen some very creative graffiti that would have made good blog entries.  They just chose the wrong avenue to express themselves.  So, I’m going to repeat these things (not the graffiti) just because they are still good points and bear repeating over and over.

We have all heard people say things like ‘I was running late for work and couldn’t find my car keys, so I prayed to god and there they were on the table beside me’.  They obviously think this was the work of god.  Fine.  I have no problem with that per se.  What does interest me though is how they can possibly think that god has time for them and their petty needs when children are dying every second of every day all around the world.  If a child is dying, how can he have time to find your keys?  I would think the keys could wait.  Forget the keys till all the children are saved.  Why even ask for help with your keys when you know there are much more immediate things that require gods attention and your efforts.

    2.  At this very moment in a Dutch Court a man is on trial for ‘speaking the truth’. I know that if something is not a fact and is offensive you are and should be in trouble. That really should go without saying, but in this instance it bears repeating. Mainly because of the words ‘not a fact’. This man, Geert Wilders, is on trial for offending Muslims with the truth. If what he had said was lies I wouldn’t have paid this piece a second thought. The fact is though that all he did is quote sections of the Koran and inform people of wrongdoings by Muslims in countries throughout the world. It has been agreed that his movie, Fitna, is in part offensive. But who among us has not been offended by a movie at least once in our life. I wonder then what should happen about that? All movie makers, actors, writers etc, should be jailed? I suppose then it goes on to authors of books. You must admit that they offend a lot of people too. Well, thinking about it, so do politicians. Jail them too? All talk show hosts and Radio DJ’s should be incarcerated too if this is to be followed to it’s logical conclusion.

For shit sake people, get over yourselves and stop ‘taking offense’. Do what any other mature people with half a freaking brain do and ignore anyone that you think is so foolish as to offend you. How much longer is this rubbish going to be allowed to infect our political and justice systems?   Until countries are being ruled by different religious beliefs and we end up in a worldwide Holy War? You think this won’t happen? Listen to the fundies of all religions and see what their beliefs are regarding punishment of their own people. Just what lengths do you think they’ll go to if it isn’t their own? You can have your beliefs for all I care.  But make them personal beliefs and stop trying to shove it down the throats of everyone else.

    3.  Here you go. Australia’s Internet Filter is on the way. Have your say. Linky
